The bio-based industry exists on the interface of several sectors: chemical, agro, food, feed and pharmaceuticals.
In the areas of knowledge and technology, these sectors have increasingly more overlap. All five are involved in several current themes:

- new (bio-based) raw materials
- health and product safety (in terms of consuming as well as ‘working with')
